Professor Katarzyna Celinska Wins Grant Supporting Black, Race & Ethnic Studies Research

Dr. Katarzyna (Kashka) Celinska was recognized with a BRES Seed Grant from the Black, Race and Ethnic Studies (BRES) Collaboration Hub. The grants support promising research at the early stages of development and aim to foster innovative, multidisciplinary scholarship in the field of Black, race and ethnic studies.

Celinska, an associate professor in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice, researches corrections and particularly incarcerated women, evaluation of violence prevention programs and international criminal justice with a special focus on Poland. Her most recent publications include “‘A storm is coming:’ The New York Times Coverage of the COVID-19 Pandemic in American Prison,” with Amina Cheboubi, in Current Issues in Criminal Justice (2024), “Classification of Women in Prison: A Typology Based on Mental Health Symptoms and Coping Strategies,” with Irina Fanarraga, in International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology (2024) and “The Contemporary American Juvenile Justice System: Revisiting Parens Patriae,” with Amina Cheboubi, in Archives of Criminology (2023). Celinska earned an MA in law from the University of Warsaw and a PhD in sociology from the University of Utah.
